Attempt Number One:

“You know what would be really nice?”

“Hm?”

“If you made me those awesome brownies of yours.”

“Tony.”

“It was worth a shot.”

Attempt Number Two:

“I’ll do whatever you want if you make me some of those brownies.”

“Will you stop asking for them afterwards?”

“...Judging from previous experience...Nope.”

“Then no.”

“Damn it.”

Attempt Number Three:

“Tony, what’s wrong?!”

“M-My chest...the arc reactor in my chest...It’s intoxicating me again...”

“What?! B-But I thought that you had taken care of that!”

“It’s worse than the palladium...My sensors didn’t pick it up until I—Augh!”

“Tony!”

“I...I know that there’s one cure...”

“Really? What is it? I’ll do anything to help!”

“I need...”

“What is it?!”

“...Your brownies.”

“...Tony...”

“Yes?”

“I’m gonna kill you.”

“...You know, they usually say that the third time’s the charm.”

Attempt Number Twenty-Two:

“Can you make me some brownies?”

“No.”

“Damn.”

Attempt Number Thirty-One:

Tony had been bothering you about those accursed brownies of yours ever since you had made them for his birthday a month ago. Yes, it had been a month, and Tony had fallen absolutely smitten for your delicious brownies. You really couldn’t blame him, though. Everybody loved your brownies. They were cut into individual pieces, rectangular and seemingly flawless. A dollop of whipped cream topped the delicious little desserts. Chocolate syrup was drizzled artistically on the brownies, complimenting both taste and appearance. You had baked the brownies with almost absolute perfection back then, the outer layer slightly crunchy while the insides were soft and chewy. It wasn’t so chewy to the point where you actually had to put effort in eating the delectable delights, but it was chewy enough so that you had enough time to appreciate the flavor. Everyone loved your brownies, especially Thor, who almost ate the whole tray. Luckily, you had made more than one batch for Tony’s party.

But that was the past. It had literally been a month since Tony’s birthday, and you were tired of him continuously asking you for your brownies. He asked you every day, in several different methods. Sometimes he would create a whole scheme, and other times he would simply ask. He would bribe you and he would complain. Despite his best efforts, though, you refused every time. The more he asked, the more annoyed you became with him.

Admittedly, you had liked this attention at first. You had a bit of a thing for Tony Stark, and you always enjoyed having conversations with him. He would always make you laugh, and sometimes he would even get a bit sentimental and show you some of his true emotions and thoughts. You learned that he wasn’t just Iron Man or a genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, but he was also a man who had feelings. He was as human as anyone. And you loved him for everything that he was.

Lately, however, all he would talk about with you was your brownies. You teased him in the beginning, playfully denying him of your pastries. But then it started to get consistent. Too consistent. He would ask you for them, you would reject, and he would shrug and leave. Was that what you were to him? Something to get free food out of? Sure, you knew that you were pretty good in the culinary arts, but in truth, it hurt you. He never extended his conversations with you. He just...stopped.

You sulked as you walked into the kitchen, which the Avengers had kindly named “(Y/N)’s Kitchen”, since you were practically the (volunteered) personal chef of all of the Avengers. You would make everyone what they liked, except for Tony and his brownies. You set your hands on the handle of the fridge, hoping that you could bake away your frustration.

“Hey there sugar,” Tony put his elbow over the fridge door that you had opened. He gave you these sweets-related nicknames often. You gave him an annoyed glance and shut the door, almost wishing to make him fall. To your dismay, he had seen it coming, and stood up straight just in time.

“Tony,” you growled. You didn’t bother to make eye contact with him as you opened a cabinet door. “Leave me alone. I’m not making you any stupid brownies.” You could sense Tony’s frown as you turned your back to him, taking out some flour as you did so. You expected him to leave before you could look back at him.

“Why not?”

Your eyes widened. The container of flour was still in your hands as you stood still. He had stayed...And he had asked you a question that you always asked yourself. But the answer always hurt you.

“(Y/N)?” Tony tapped your shoulder.

“Because I don’t want to,” you hissed at him, pushing him back with your arm. You wished that he would just leave. “Go away.”

“Come on, (y/n)!” Tony whined, crossing his arms. “It’s all I ask you for!”

“Don’t you get it? That’s all you ever ask me for!” You turned around and shouted at him, pushing him farther away from you. Shock was apparent in his eyes. “Every time we talk, all you ever do is ask me for these stupid brownies! That’s all you freaking do!” Your eyes started to get misty as you spilled out these words to the man in front of you. “Don’t you think that I want to talk about something else?! If you had just shut the hell up about the damned things, I would’ve made them for you! You want to know why I won’t bake for you?!”

Tony just blinked in surprise.

“Because if I do...Then what would you do with me then?” Your arms hung to your sides, limp as you felt a river start flowing down your cheeks. “You’d get what you wanted. You’d have no use for me anymore. If I wanted to keep talking to you, then the only choice I had was to refuse and decline. Even if we only talked about one thing.”

No response. But he was still standing there.

“Just...Just leave me alone, Stark. I wish I never went to your damned party and brought those pieces of shit,” you choked out, wiping your eyes with the back of your hands as you started to walk away, avoiding any contact with Tony. That was it. It was over now; you knew how Tony was. He would start avoiding you after collecting his thoughts, too. And you sure as hell weren’t going to let him make the last move.

“Looks like my plan went wrong this time,” you could hear Tony’s steps as he followed you. What else did he have to say? Why wouldn’t he leave you alone the one time when you wanted him to? You had enough. You walked faster. So did he. “Slow down, will you? We’re not done here, cupcake.”

You wanted to ignore him, but you simply couldn’t...Especially since he grabbed you from behind, pulling you back towards him. He hugged you tightly, making you confused and even more flustered than you already were. You couldn’t react; too many feelings were in the way.

“Yeah, I guess I did get carried away when I was asking you for those brownies of yours,” Tony said casually. A little too casually for comfort. “But I only did it all those times because I thought that we’d run out of things to talk about. I see you talk with the other guys, and all of you always get the conversation going. But when we talk, alone, it’s different, you know?”

...You were still processing the fact that he was holding you.

“I start losing myself whenever we have conversations. Yeah, I’m pretty sure that I act normal and stuff, but it’s still an act. Now I know what you’re thinking; that you’re just another woman in my life that I’ll eventually get tired of and leave. But that’s not true. You’re different, because I actually care about you. I, well, you know. I love you and stuff.”

...You did not know that.

...You definitely did not know that.

“So uh, yeah,” Tony let go of you and awkwardly stepped back. He scratched the back of his neck and pocketed his hands, waiting for a response as he chewed the inside of his cheek. He still wasn’t used to talking about serious things like actually loving someone. Especially towards the person he felt these feelings for. The fact that it had been minutes since Tony confessed to you didn’t help him that much either.

No one could blame you for taking that long to think of something to say to Tony. You felt your heart race faster than a speeding bullet, and you were hoping this wasn’t a prank so that he could ask you for those brownies again, but you were too lost to come up with a proper response. “You’re an idiot...”

“What?” Tony raised an eyebrow at you in a comedic fashion.

You turned around, your hands in the form of fists. It almost looked like you were going to hit him straight in the face, but you didn’t. Instead, you threw your arms around his chest, your tears soaking a certain portion of his shirt. “You’re an idiot,” you repeated, though your response was muffled due to the fact that you buried your face in his chest.

Tony grinned, his mouth being pulled to the right as he stroked your (h/c) hair lovingly. He kissed your forehead, rubbing your back in comfort. “I know I am,” he chuckled, hugging you tight. “But judging by the fact that you’re hugging me right now, I’m going to say that you love me anyway.”

You nodded, a soft laugh escaping your lips. Tony Stark...the Tony Stark who you had fallen for had loved you back. You couldn’t have asked for someone better.

“Hey, honey,” Tony caught your attention again. You looked up, and just as you thought that you couldn’t be surprised any further, he kissed you. He wasn’t forceful, as you always thought it would be, but that didn’t mean that you didn’t like it. In fact, you thought that this was better. He certainly worked on you for more time than you were used to, because when you both had parted for air, you immediately started to inhale and exhale deeply.

Tony smiled at you. Genuinely. “So...”

You put a finger on his lips and giggled. “Yes Tony. Now I’ll make you your brownies.”

“Sweet. Just like you, hm?” He seemed to know all too well that he was being old-fashioned as he gently stroked your hair again.

“But you have to share with the others.”

“Even Thor?”

“Thor gets his own batch. You know how he is.”

“Lucky bastard.”
